Thanksgiving is a Public holiday in the US, and is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Originally it was a harvest festival and has been celebrated since 1789, after a proclamation by then President George Washington.
In 1863 during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”.
Thanksgiving with Christmas and the New Year, is a part of the broader holiday season in the US, and is celebrated and observed by all Americans. It is day you spend with family and loved ones, and is surrounded with traditions that mainly focuses on food and gathering for a big meal.
Thanksgiving is an American tradition and is not well known outside the US.
